Ever wondered what it takes? We all know that a good idea goes a long way but how can you make your film stand out against the rest. Producing + writing for the short film + video format has never been more competitive or challenging. Insights from successful short film directors, producers + film festival representatives may just tip the scales your way.
BRONWYN KIDD
DIRECTOR FLICKERFEST
An independent short film + documentary maker for the past 11 years, Bronwyns films have encompassed comedy to Indigenous + individual rights. Credits include 'Walking With My Sisters' about Indigenous land rights + 'Beachballs' about the Bondi community + the impact of a ten thousand seat Olympic beach volleyball stadium on their beach. She has also produced the short film ‘Search’. As the director of Flickerfest, Bronwyn has curated hundreds of short film programmes for both the festival and its national touring programme. Since March 2002 she has also been the director of the short film bureau distributing the best of Australian Short films to the international marketplace.

GRAHAM THORNBURN
ACTING HEAD OF FILM + TELEVISION AT THE AFTRS
Graham taught at UTS, Screenskill + the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). He was instrumental in overseeing two AFC Indigenous Drama initiatives that led to the highly regarded Shifting Sands + Crossing Tracks series. Graham has been an assessor for the NSWFTO, directed + produced Countdown + BeatBox, written + directed an AFC funded short film, What Comes After Why?, directed, produced + co-written a teleplay called Waiting, as well as directed music videos for The Divinyls + Goanna. His TV directing credits include Blue Heelers, Heartbreak High, GP, A Country Practice, The Flying Doctors, Rafferty's Rules, Palace of Dreams, Singles, Sweet and Sour, and mini-series Good Vibrations + Seen But Not Heard.

KATRINA BECK
DIRECTOR KALEIDOSCOPE | COORDINATOR PLAYNOW/ACT NOW FESTIVAL
Katrina studied theatre at UWS. After producing/directing + operating lighting/sound in theatre, Katrina moved into video + film. She has worked on + directed many short films, her last ‘Unseen’ screened extensively on the international circuit. She is Director of Metro Screen Kaleidoscope short video, film + multimedia festival + she also coordinates the short film festival Play Now/Act Now, getting smashed, young people alcohol + drugs, in partnership with NSW Health. Katrina considers short film as a genre unto itself + not merely a stepping stone to
feature production.
