INTERACTIVE SCREENWRITING SESSION with JACK FELDSTEIN
FREE for members | $10 non-members
What is the central dramatic question of
your screenplay?
Recently returned from New York, experienced writer and filmmaker
Jack Feldstein will present his animated film THE FANTASTICAL
WORLD OF SCRIPTWRITING, in an interactive screenwriting session
that will cover the essential elements of writing a great script.
This session is a great opportunity to apply Jack’s principles
to your own writing and develop engaging characters, interesting
scenes, raise the stacks in your film and add richness to your
screenplay – whatever draft it’s in.
In association with the Metro Screen Network, Jack will elaborate
on the points raised in his film in an enthusiastic and passionate
presentation, which clearly displays his long-time love of screenwriting.
THE FANTASTICAL WORLD OF SCRIPTWRITING was recently screened at
the Metro Screen Network’s Audience Test Screening event
to great enthusiasm; it is a fun stream-of-consciousness animation,
which outlines a checklist of screenwriting fundamentals.
About Jack Feldstein: Jack is an
established screenwriter, script editor, playwright, producer,
digital animator, filmmaker, series creator and lecturer in Sydney.
His plays have been performed at the Ensemble Theatre, National
Institute of Dramatic Arts, The Malthouse in Melbourne, the Royalty
Theatre, Adelaide and presented at the Australian National Playwright’s
Conference. He is well known as a screenwriter and creator of
various television shows and interactive scriptwriter for 3D computer
animation webisodes.
For five years, Jack was Head Writer at Brilliant Digital Entertainment
where he was instrumental in developing interactive multipath
animated series including XENA-PRINCESS WARRIOR with Universal,
SUPERMAN with DC Comics and SPIDERMAN with Marvel Comics.
Jack has also lectured at the Australian School Of Film, Television
& Radio, as well as tutoring at the University of Western
Sydney in linear and non-linear scriptwriting.

FIRST FEATURE with NASH EDGERTON
mapping the journey from shorts to full length
Metro Screen Network’s FIRST
FEATURE examines the leap from making short films to feature length
productions, with Australia’s fresh filmmaking talent.
Many short filmmakers aspire to tell their stories in feature
length, but the path from shorts to first feature can be difficult,
with only a handful achieving this goal.
FIRST FEATURE on November 18 aims to provide
inspiring, practical advice you can use.
Held in Metro Screen’s Studio 1, Nash Edgerton will discuss
his career path, his filmmaking process, how his shorts assisted
him, and how he was able to direct his first feature length film
and secure a cinema release.
Nash will also screen several of his early shorts, including those
that helped define his career including his first short film ‘Bloodlock’.
“FIRST FEATURE was conceived to show filmmakers that
going from short films to features is achievable and not some
unreachable dream” says Michael Chrisoulakis, Metro
Screen Network Coordinator.
Nash Edgerton is a filmmaker who knows his craft from both sides
of the camera from his work as an actor, stunt performer, editor,
producer, writer, and director. Since his short DEADLINE, which
took out the top prize at Tropfest in 1997, Nash has directed
a number of award-winning short films and music videos for some
of Australia’s most popular musicians including Missy Higgins,
Ben Lee, Eskimo Joe and The Sleepy Jackson. His most recent short
SPIDER has so far played at over 35 film festivals around the
world and won 14 awards. FIRST FEATURE will chart Nash’s
journey from short films to the recent cinema release of ‘The
Square’.
Producer on ‘The Square’ Louise Smith states, “The
thing that amazed me that first time, and for every other short
film Nash has ever directed, is that audiences love them, LOVE
THEM! They’re completely entertained by them and completely
surprised by them….Nash has an ability to direct performances
and action and ultimately just make a really entertaining film.”
Host: Lynden Barber
Lynden Barber is a Sydney-based freelance
journalist specialising in film and music, a feature film script
assessor, and a curator for the National Film and Sound Archive
website australianscreen.com <http://australianscreen.com>
. Before serving as Artistic Director of the Sydney Film Festival
in 2005 and 2006 he was the staff film writer at daily broadsheet
The Australian for a decade and before that the senior film critic
at The Sydney Morning Herald for five years. His professional
journalism appears most frequently in The Australian and Limelight
magazine.

Metro Screen holds YOUR audience test screening
Being precious just won’t cut it!
Have a rough cut of your film and not sure if the twist makes
sense? Have a TV pilot that you’re sure is a winner, but
you’re the only one who’s seen it? You laugh at every
gag, but will your audience get the punch line?
The Metro Screen Network presents an opportunity to test screen
your work before a film savvy audience before you lock off your
edit or release your production to the world. We recognises the
value for test viewing projects and also recognise that this is
not always easy to organise, so we are doing it for you.
“Who are we making our films for, if not an audience?”
states Network Coordinator, Michael Chrisoulakis. “A
single piece of feedback could make a difference between a good
film and great film.”
This is a genuine opportunity to gain constructive and critical
feedback from your peers and those working or looking to work
in the industry. Open to anyone who wants feedback on their project
– rough cut, trailer, TV pilot, single scene, promo, music
video, TVC. Any style and genre acceptable up to 20min running
time.
“It’s easy to become too close to a project and
loose perspective.” says Michael, “This is
a great opportunity to screen your production before an audience
and see what’s working and what’s not before it’s
too far down the track.”
Arm yourself with questionnaires, drill the audience for feedback,
or simply observe to see they are laughing in all the right places
(and for the right reasons).
Even if you don’t have a project to test screen this is
the perfect opportunity to discover and understand your fellow
filmmaker's processes and see what works, what doesn't and most
importantly why. So come along and join in the critical feedback
discussions and gain insight that can be applied to your next
project.
To submit a production for the test screening or for more information,
please contact Metro Screen Network Coordinator Michael Chrisoulakis
on network@metroscreen.org.au
