Indigenous Documentary Making course

Metro Screen ran an Indigenous Documentary Making Course for young people in Bankstown in November and December of 2010. This project was funded by the NSW Department of Education and Training.

During the program students learnt to develop creative ideas, shoot and edit with all this culminating in the production of three short documentaries. These documentaries explore the bright side of depression, the dangers of how addictive Facebook can be and White Ribbon Day which spreads the message that violence against women is not okay.

The six students also went on an excursion to Blackfella Films run by Rachel Perkins and Darren Dale where they discussed the art of documentary making, watched a documentary and met professional editors.

The course was tutored by Leslie Marsh, who has over 10 years experience in directing short films, music videos, corporates and documentaries.

We had an inspiring and insightful chat with Darren Dale and Rachel Perkins and watched a moving documentary they produced titled ‘Lani’s Story’.

We provide:

  • training, professional development and production support in film, TV and digital media.
  • provide individuals and organisations with equipment, such as cameras, tripods, editing-ready laptops, lights and sound recording gear that may not be easily available or accessible at the local level.
  • provide training in screen production that articulates contemporary life in Western Sydney and regional NSW. Use productions made through this training as a means of expression for re-engaging marginalised people with their communities, particularly youth, indigenous, and people from non-English speaking backgrounds.
  • increase the participation of regional filmmakers and multimedia producers in film festivals, online digital media festivals and competitions.
  • develop, wherever possible, qualified and experienced local tutors to provide skills training, thus developing a regional network for ongoing skills development.
  • augment regional festivals and conferences with skills based seminars and workshops.

The Team

Our tutors and mentors are all highly qualified filmmakers and artists with vast experience in project work and training. The Mobile Unit team has received national and international awards for its work through Metro Screen.

How it Began

In 2001 Metro Screen received capital grant funds from the NSW Ministry for the Arts and DCITA to purchase three Mobile Unit equipment kits, allowing Metro Screen to deliver off-site film and video training for up to 12 participants. In 2002 Metro Screen received further capital funds to complete the equipment kits so digital media, editing and post production could be added to the range of mobile training courses and projects.

“The tailored training was perfectly packaged to up-skill our employees. Thanks to the Mobile Unit we can now produce projects more efficiently and to a higher quality standard.”
Alex Kember- Production Assistant, Revolver Film

“Working with Metro Screen’s Mobile Unit has been a great asset to our clients. They were able to provide accredited training to give people much needed skills when heading into the competitive media industry.”
Don Mulholland, Aboriginal Project and Employment Officer, WISE Employment

“The Mobile Unit team brought a great deal of enthusiasm, excitement and passion to the workshop. This enabled the students to feel confident to learn all aspects of filmmaking and they have since grown in confidence and become more involved in making their own films.”
