Highlights

With an industry placement, client driven production and focus on practical industry relevant skills, this course enables you to join the over 80% of graduates who have started their own small business, found full time employment or sustainable freelance work in the film, TV and transmedia industries.

Internships have been provided by Curious Films, Firelight, Movie Network, Azure Productions, Screen NSW, Network Seven and Network Nine's 'Underbelly- Razor' and 'Titan View'.

Course overview

An industry placement and client driven production means this course is focused on practical industry relevant skills that will enable you to work in the film, television, online and portable media industries. Upon graduation you will have created a showreel containing a documentary, drama and a client focused production.

 

The intensive full-time program includes 18 hours per week of face-to-face classes combined with several self-paced learning elements. The curriculum is specifically designed to address the employment needs of the film, TV, online and portable media industries, so allowing participants a broad range of career paths upon graduation. Study includes a series of participant-led productions, technical workshops, intensive classroom based teaching and self-paced project work.

 

Participants work on a documentary, a short drama and then prove their credentials by working on a real-life assignment from an industry client e.g. music video or television commercial. Each participant works on all productions and secures a major crew role of producer, director, cinematographer, 1st AD, sound recordist, continuity or editor on at least three.

 

Participants are also able to undertake a voluntary industry placement with a film, TV online or portable media organisation providing valuable workplace experience and the opportunity to make an impression.

 

Upon graduation, participants receive the nationally recognised qualification, the Certificate IV in Screen and Media CUF40107. Before graduating, participants also create a DVD showreel of their work.
 

Industry tutors + personalised training

Metro Screen’s tutors are industry professionals providing personalised training and share their extensive knowledge and skills. Keeping class sizes small of no more than 15, allowing participants extensive practical time with all equipment.

Adam Howden– Cinematography:

Adam’s work has been shown at numerous film festivals throughout both nationally and internationally. His music video's and TVCs are regulars on Australian TV and have received numerous awards from the Australian Cinematographers Society.

Tom Zubrycki - Documentary: Tom Zubrycki has earned an international reputation for his substantial and widely-respected body of documentaries. He works mainly in an observational style and his films are narrative-based and strongly character-driven. His latest film The Hungry Tide, currently in production, is about the Pacific nation of Kiribati - one of the countries in the world most vulnerable to climate change.

Julia Overton - Documentary:  Julia has had a career in the screen production industry in Australia and internationally across all genres. She has worked for Australia's national screen agencies assisting filmmakers in the development, financing, production and marketing of their projects specialising in the past five years in documentary. She is on the board of the Australian International Documentary Conference, is an international advisor' for Hot Docs Canada, a member of the Australian Directors Guild and is a national co ordinator for INPUT the public broadcast television event. In May 2012 the annual event will be held in Sydney and she is currently workig on this event.

Timothy Wilde – Scriptwriting:

Timothy is a screenwriter with success across all platforms. His list of awards include an AWGIE award for Interactive Media, Digital Emmy Award and BAFTA nomination for Primeval Evolved.  In 2010 Timothy was the Australian Writers Guild winner of the John Hinde Award for Outstanding Science Fiction.

Xanthe Highfield - Production Design:

Xanthe is an AFI award winning Production Designer, she has worked as a Production Designer and Art Director for the ABC, SBS, Foxtel’s Comedy Channel and on many TVCs and music videos.

Cathy Vogan - Editing:

Cathy has 20 year + broadcast professional and Apple Certified Trainer, and is highly skilled in many areas, including graphic design, editing, compositing, animation, DVD authoring and web design. She is also a prolific media artist. Her work throughout the world, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Brazil, the USA and Australia.

Renae Moore - Producing:  Renae has studied producing at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School. Her Short Film 'Love" was accepted as part of the SBS catalogue in 2003.  She has worked in the Australian film and television industry for over twelve years as a script supervisor. Some of the productions she has worked on include Love My Way, Packed To The Rafters, Sea Patrol and Cedar Boys.

 

Metro Screen course coordinator Carine Chai ensures participants have all the necessary support to make the most of their experience as well as providing advice on applying for jobs and industry contacts. 

 

Facilities, equipment and netwoking

Metro Screen’s Hire and Post Production department supplies equipment to professional productions, and is expertly maintained. Metro Screen participants learn on an impressive range of industry standard gear, ranging from broadcast quality HD digital cameras with tapeless formats, fully functional Chroma key multi-cam TV studio and G5 iMac post production facilities.

Participants learn the latest version of professional standard software, including Final Cut Pro X, DVD Studio Pro 4 and Photoshop CS3.

Graduate and launch your career

Throughout the course, participants receive a wealth of advice about the film, TV online and portable media industries. By graduation, participants will have devised a career plan and be well placed to take advantage of Metro Screen’s industry contacts. As we find most participants need and want to gain work, this becomes our priority as we identify a range of employment opportunities. While we cannot guarantee employment, a high percentage of our participants secure employment in the industry. All participants create a personalised DVD show reel to assist in launching their screen careers. A public screening and graduation ceremony is held for all participants. As well as a celebration for crew, cast, family and friends, this is an opportunity for participants to network with the industry contacts they invite. Metro Screen also continues its ongoing support of graduates through advice, contact with screen industry networks and access to Metro Screen’s own professional services and production grants. With the approval of filmmakers, Metro Screen also submits graduate works into film festivals and to other screening opportunities.

Olivia Gelbart

Undertook an her participant Internship as Production attachment on Leon Ford’s first feature film Griff The Invisible starring Ryan Kwanten. She has gone on to be accepted for study production at AFTRS.

 

Daniel Fenech

Secured work as a Director’s Assistant while studying at Metro Screen. He works for Curious at Fox Studios and recently shot is second film through Metro Screens Jump Start Subsidy.

 

James Hunter’s

Metro Screen Cert IV project film Struggle won Best Film in the National Youth Category [Under 25s] in the Canberra Short Film Festival and first prize in the Urban Shorts Film Festival. James is continuing to make films and works as a Production Assistant at Prime Television.

 

Steve Crombie

Steve received funding through the Ignite project and produced his program ‘Lonely Planets Natural Born Traveller’ which sold to Discovery and picked up Best Cinematographer and was nominated for two other awards at the Asian TV Awards 2010.

 

Annmaree Bell
Set up her own production company, Azure Productions. With a large repertoire of short films, she has just produced two Screen Australia funded projects and is has received Research and Development funding to develop feature film ‘Teenage Kicks’.
