TARGET GROUP:
DET has funded this course to provide training to Indigenous students who want to pursue a career in film or TV. The course is designed to provide training to those with limited or no filmmaking experience, and limited or no technical expertise in the areas of camera operation, sound and editing.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND CONTENT:
Up to 15 students in total participate in this comprehensive, hands-on course in digital media production. Providing you with a complete education including short film, television production and documentary making, the Certificate IV in Screen covers screenwriting, producing, directing, camera, lighting, sound and editing.

Using professional broadcast quality cameras, Metro Screen’s chroma key sound stage studio and Final Cut Pro editing suites, participants work together to produce location dramas, documentaries and studio dramas. Each student will hold a major crew role [producer, director, cinematographer, editor] on at least three productions and will participate as a crewmember on the majority of productions made.

All students will have the opportunity to develop their own story ideas in a workshop setting. Although industry standard script structure and layout will be covered, students will also be encouraged to work on creating character, plot and interesting narratives by employing whatever method suits them best.

The group will also develop and extend their skills through a number of smaller production exercises where creative and technical concepts will be challenged. Students will learn technical skills while gaining an understanding of the theory and history of Australian and international cinema, as well as the current trends of the TV sector and online and new media areas.

Students will be fully briefed on how to find work in the industry and where most opportunities exist. There may be the possibility of work experience or paid employment through Metro Screen’s contacts and industry partners following the course,

All participants will produce a personalised DVD show reel as a tool to assist in launching their filmmaking careers.

At the end of the course, a public screening and graduation ceremony is held. Metro Screen also continues its ongoing support to graduates through advice, contact with film industry networks and access to Metro Screen’s production subsidy rounds.
