Dare I Ask?
Was a weekly TV show produced by Metro Screen and UWS.
Concept for the show was: Dare I Ask? will ask the questions we all want to know the answers to – but it might not be answers we get, rather more questions instead! Through a selection of guests, Dare I Ask? will do just that, ask questions and let opinions come to life. Real people talking about things we come across everyday. Does art exist on the street or just in the galleries? Is marijuana harmful even if it helps you? Do genital piercings take body modification too far?
This was a volunteer-run production, Dare I Ask? recorded every Monday night at Metro Screen.

Dare I Ask? wins National ANTENNA Award for Best Program in Community Television.
The cutting edge television show produced by University of Western Sydney and Metro Screen received top honours at the Antenna Awards in Melbourne on Jun 27, taking out the Best Program of the Year and Best Current Affairs Program awards. Hosted by Tilly Boleyn and Tim Brunero, “Dare I Ask” is a weekly chat show broadcast on TVS [Television Sydney] and other Australian community television stations that explores controversial topics such as sex workers, Australia’s citizenship test and female infertility. The Federal Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy Senator Stephen Conroy was the guest presenter at last night’s awards, which acknowledge program excellence in Australian Community Television.
UWS devised “Dare I Ask?” in partnership with Metro Screen as a way to encourage UWS students and members of the wider community to become involved in producing new, high quality content for the community television station TVS [found on Digital Channel 44].
“’Dare I Ask?’ represents the growing professionalism of community television, and to be recognised as the best community television program in Australia at the Antenna Awards is a ringing endorsement of the hard work of the volunteers” says the Associate Head of the UWS School of Communication Arts, Rachel Bentley.
Christina Alvarez, Metro Screen’s General Manager says “Dare I Ask?” has raised the bar for community television program makers in Australia.
“UWS and Metro Screen wanted to make engaging content for a television audience that is looking for something new and challenging, and to be publically recognised for achieving this is a big reward,” Ms Alvarez says.
“Dare I Ask?” Series Producer Linda Mirabilio says the awards are a fantastic acknowledgement of all the hard work that went into making the program.
“We had an amazingly talented range of volunteers who worked on every aspect of the program, from catering to set design, topic research to lighting and production co-ordination to make-up,.... In all we had over 150 volunteers working on the show in some way or another, and without their commitment the show wouldn’t have won these awards” Ms Mirabilio says
tvs – A Different View
Television Sydney [tvs] is the first permanent free-to-air television channel to launch in Sydney in more than 25 years. Metro Screen and the University of Western Sydney [UWS] are proud to be the founding members of tvs.
tvs aims to provide exciting and entertaining programs which reflect the interests, concerns, and passions of the diverse audiences and communities of Sydney, including series and one-offs.
tvs particularly encourages producers to explore new creative concepts and formats. tvs have no hard and fast rules about the types of programs that will be broadcast but producers are urged to consider whether the subject matter adds to the diversity of free-to-air television and whether theirs is a program others will want to watch.
